The new VSPAA board held its first meeting on May 31, 2003, at the Area 18 office in Charlottesville. Due to a technicality in the VSPAA constitution and bylaws, the increase in annual membership announced previously was not approved. Dues remain at $12.
Association members who need support should contact a VSPAA board member or a division representative.
The Auxiliary celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2004. Charter members will receive special recognition during the celebration. If you are a charter member whose dues have lapsed, you may elect to regain charter member status by paying the past dues you have skipped. If you simply wish to be a regular member again, pay only the $12 annual fee.
A new By-laws Committee has been formed. Their first meeting was July 19, 2003. If any member or former VSPAA member has a copy of the auxiliary's constitution and bylaws past March 20, 1996, please let a board member know. We sure could use a copy.
VSPAA History
The Virginia State Police Association Auxiliary was formed on March 31, 1989. Kyle Miller, then president of the Virginia State Police Association, met with spouses of the association members to see if there was enough interest and need to form an auxiliary. The first officers were elected on April 1, 1989.
From its inception, the VSPAA has been a non-political organization with the main emphasis being placed on support and well being of the families and the Association. Within the next two years, the officers and general membership adopted a logo, created the organizational by-laws and started recruiting members as representatives to lead the divisions and individual areas within the state.
The membership meets through statewide meetings, division meetings and individual area gatherings. Members in individual divisions and areas pooled together their resources to provide police families with the physical and emotional support during times of illness, emergencies or other tragedies. They join together for celebrations, too.
The Auxiliary supports its financial needs through annual membership dues and the sale of VSPAA merchandise. A newsletter provides membership with updates on activities across the state. Currently, the Auxiliary is seeking to further serve its members, increase participation on the area/divisional levels, increase membership and to continue to support the Association.
Current and former members, please help us find some missing items including our beautiful auxiliary flag made by Sandy Swiger as well as our historian books and any other VSPAA items that belong to the Auxiliary. If you have something you think belongs to VSPAA, return it to any member of drop it off at the VSPA office, 6944 Forest Hill Ave., Richmond, VA 23225.
Note from the president: This was our beginning on March 31, 1989. To Kyle Miller, the VSPA Board and membership, we owe a great deal for our beginning. To all those who are charter members of the VSPA Auxiliary, I know you are each as proud of our beginning and accomplishments as I am.
