The Virginia State Police Association Auxiliary (VSPAA) was formed on March
31, 1989. Kyle Miller, then president of the Virginia State Police
Association, met with spouses of the association members to see if there was
enough interest and need to form an auxiliary. The first officers were
elected on April 1, 1989.
From its inception, the VSPAA has been a non-political
organization with the main emphasis being placed on support and well being
of the families and the Association. Within the next two years, the officers
and general membership adopted a logo, created the organizational by-laws
and started recruiting members as representatives to lead the divisions and
individual areas within the state. The membership meets through statewide
meetings, division meetings and individual area gatherings. Members in
individual divisions and areas pooled together their resources to provide
police families with the physical and emotional support during times of
illness, emergencies or other tragedies. They join together for
celebrations, too.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The objectives of the VSPAA are social, civic, and
educational. The organization works in conjunction with the Virginia State
Police Association (VSPA) in ensuring the best law enforcement agency in the
state, as well as to work in all regards for the betterment of all sworn
officers, their families, and citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
MISSION
The mission of the VSPAA is to provide opportunities
for its members to interact in social and civic functions. In addition, it
is our responsibility to educate our families about issues that are unique
to the police profession.
FOCUS
The primary purpose of the VSPAA is to serve as a
support group for our members during daily life experiences, times of
crisis, and job related stresses that affect each member of a police family.
VSPAA INCOME
The Auxiliary supports its financial needs through
annual membership dues of $12 yearly due and payable on January first to the
March VSPAA meeting, which is held at the same time and location as the VSPA
Conference; and the profit from the sale of VSPAA merchandise, which is sold
through the VSPA Store and VSP Academy.
